These photographs are from the 2017 Total Solar Eclipse. This was the first complete solar eclipse I have ever seen where I wasn’t using a pinhole box for viewing. It was an amazing, spiritual, and surreal experience.
I want to begin by explaining what a pinhole box is and why it is not a good experience. In essence, you poke a small hole in the side of a cardboard box. You then place your head inside of the box opening. Then you stumble around trying to line the small hole up with the ongoing solar eclipse. For your efforts, you get a small black and white projection on the inside of the box where you are facing.
For the 2017 Total Solar Eclipse, I noticed that solar viewing glasses were becoming quite common. I checked with B and H Photography and found that selling a paper lens cover that would protect the view and the camera from the sun’s rays.
The path of the eclipse was set to pass over at least 8 National Park Service units and a multi-park viewing event was created. I decided that the best place for me to observe the eclipse was at Stones River National Battlefield, in Murfreesboro, Tennessee.
